The Difference between Standard Regen and Low Harmonic Drives
There can be some confusion about inverter types – standard / 6-pulse, low harmonic, or regen drives. In this article, we explain the differences with their pros and cons.
6-Pulse Drives
These are the most common type of inverter and they have a diode rectifier on the input.
Advantages:
Relatively cost effective
Compact
Efficient (around 98%)
Readily available
Disadvantages:
Generates harmonics on the mains, especially those without a dc or ac choke
Wastes energy when braking (via a brake resistor)
Low Harmonic Drives
These fall into two categories – those utilising a passive filter and those with active front end. Inomax refer to their active front end inverters as Ultra Low Harmonic Drives to be clear about the technology employed.
Passive Filter Advantages:
Relatively cost effective
Simple
Passive Filter Disadvantages
Tuned for a specific load
Can get overloaded if load or supply changes
Non-dynamic
Bulky
Active Front End Advantages:
Transistor input bridge effectively does not create harmonics
Compact
Easy to install and use
Active Front End Disadvantages:
More expensive
Reduced inverter efficiency to around 95%. However, since there are effectively no harmonics generated, this efficiency loss is compensated within the power system by reducing the losses in the transformer, cables and motor when compared to a 6-pulse inverter
Regenerative (Regen) Drives
These drives share the same hardware as the low harmonic drives with active front end. In this case the input transistors are programmed to allow power to flow both ways i.e. into the motor and when under deceleration, from the motor back into the mains. This is particularly useful on cyclic loads such as hoists.
Advantages:
They can allow energy that would be wasted to regenerate back to the mains; this saves money
Excellent braking characteristics
Disadvantages:
High capital outlay
Reduced efficiency (the same argument applies as per low harmonic drives with active front end)
Inomax Low harmonic drive additional major benefits include:
1,Encoder-less Motor Operation - Superior dynamic-response performance of Inomax's patented Direct Torque Control (DTC) motor control algorithm. Many applications can be run without encoder feedback.
2,Flexibility - Only four types of diode rectifiers are used to invert AC three-phase input power to the common DC bus bar across the entire ACS880 power range (200 - 4600 HP). Inverter modules (drives) are available in five sizes (R4 - R8 frame sizes) and cover the 1 - 7000 HP range; single R8 units, or R8 units in parallel, supply the motors.
3,Compact Design - Improvements in technology and power components have reduced the total footprint of these multidrives by up to 50 percent, compared to the Traditional design.
4,Wide Range of Options - I/O extensions, field buses and a pulse encoder module all fit inside the inverters.
5,Adaptive Programming - This program extends the freely programmable I/O and extensive parameter selections built into the multidrives and accessed via the PC tool.
6,Reduced Installation Costs - Since the modular configuration utilizes a common DC bus, the cabling input power required is a single three-phase AC connection. Further, the cabling is wired to the rectifier module through a unique plug-in connector, which then powers the entire common DC line-up.
7,Redundancy - Common spare parts and the ability to keep running at reduced load, if module is disabled.
Overview of the construction An Inomax multidrive is built from several different sections.
The key units within these multidrive systems include:
1. Basic Line Modules (Basic Line Modules):
It is only designed for pure rectification, and the interior is composed of thyristor diodes and DC incoming line reactors. Electricity needs to be equipped with a brake module.
2. Feedback rectifier SLM module (Smart Line Module): [Not recommended]
Composed of IGBT and DC smoothing capacitor, it can rectify power supply and feed energy back to the grid. There must be a suitable front-end interface reactor SIM(L) for feedback. The DC bus voltage cannot be constant and adjustable. Usually under rated
load, the typical value of grid-side current harmonic THDi<30-35%
3. Active rectifier ALM module (Active Line Module): [Recommended and preferred use]
Composed of IGBT and DC smoothing capacitor, it has the function of feedback and rectification, and can also be controlled intelligently.
Control and maintain the bus voltage. The actual current effect produced on the power supply side is close to a sine wave, thereby suppressing harmful harmonics. This rectifier module must use a matching AIM incoming module.
